Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Montana business vehicle registration legal?

Yes. Registering a vehicle through a Montana business entity is entirely legal. Montana has no sales tax, and there is no law preventing out-of-state residents from forming a Montana business entity and registering a vehicle through it. We recommend consulting your own attorney or tax advisor regarding your specific situation.

What types of vehicles can be registered this way?

Almost any vehicle — cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, motorhomes, motorcycles, boats, trailers, and more. It's especially popular for high-value vehicles where the sales tax savings are significant.

Do I need to come to Montana?

No. The entire process is handled remotely. You send us your documents, we handle everything here in Missoula, and mail the completed registration back to you.

What documents do I need to provide?

For all vehicle registrations through a Montana business entity: • Montana business formation documents (Articles of Organization, Articles of Incorporation, etc. — we handle this if you don't already have one) • Operating Agreement or equivalent governing document • Completed Montana Title Application (Form MV1) with your business entity listed as owner For your vehicle title — one of the following: • Original Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) — if purchasing new from a dealer • Original signed certificate of title — if purchasing from a private party or dealer (must have wet ink signature, no photocopies accepted) • Bill of Sale — required if the title is currently in your personal name rather than your business entity name, establishing the chain of ownership transfer Additional documents that may apply: • Odometer disclosure statement (required for vehicles under 10 years old) • Lien release document — if your vehicle has or had a lien, it must be cleared before title transfer • Proof of prior sales tax payment — required if the vehicle was previously registered in another state • Notarized title — required if your title was issued in Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania Important notes: • Montana requires all original documents with wet ink signatures — photocopies will be rejected • Your business entity name on the MV1 form must match your formation documents exactly • Salvage or junk titles are not eligible — rebuilt titles are acceptable Not sure what applies to your situation? Contact us before gathering documents and we'll tell you exactly what you need based on your vehicle type, purchase source, and state of origin. Getting it right the first time avoids costly delays.

Do I still need insurance?

Yes — you'll need to insure the vehicle. Some insurance companies are familiar with Montana business registrations; others may require additional documentation. We can point you toward insurers who work with this type of registration.

What happens after the first year?

Montana business entities require an annual report filing (up to $25 state fee, though this has been waived by the Secretary of State in recent years) and your registered agent service renews annually. We'll remind you before anything is due so you never miss a deadline.
